The Science & Superpowers of Seaweed

Every so often, a children’s book comes along that feels just as exciting for adults as it does for kids. Amanda Swinimer’s The Science & Superpowers of Seaweed: A Guide for Kids is one of those rare gems. On the surface, it’s a guide to an often-overlooked plant of the sea—but once you start reading, you realize it’s also a celebration of curiosity, respect for nature, and the magic of the ocean. Piggybacking on the adult version we explored at The Science and Spirit of Seaweed – Canadian Cookbooks children can now join your curiosity of the sea world.

Swinimer, a marine biologist and seaweed harvester, clearly adores her subject. That passion shines through on every page. She doesn’t simply tell kids what seaweed is; she invites them into its world. Seaweed becomes a character in its own right—one with fascinating abilities, an important role in our ecosystem, and even a few “superpowers.” Kids (and adults) quickly learn that seaweed produces oxygen, provides food and shelter for countless creatures, and even helps fight climate change by absorbing carbon. Suddenly, that slippery green stuff we see on the beach transforms into a superhero of the ocean.

The book is beautifully designed for its young audience. Bursting with illustrations, photos, and playful explanations, it breaks big concepts down into bite-sized pieces that are easy to grasp. Yet it never talks down to readers. Instead, it nurtures a sense of wonder, encouraging kids to ask questions and explore further.

This book is unique in that it’s a mix of science, storytelling, and hands-on engagement. Swinimer sprinkles in folklore, Indigenous perspectives, and stories that connect children not just to the science of seaweed, but also to its cultural and historical importance. She also offers interactive activities—like scavenger hunts, kitchen experiments, and simple science projects—that make the learning experience come alive. It’s the kind of book that doesn’t stay on a shelf; it begs to be taken on a beach walk or used in a classroom.

But beyond the fun facts and activities, the book carries a deeper message. Our oceans are fragile, and seaweed plays a vital role in their health. Swinimer manages to convey this without being heavy-handed or frightening. Instead, she frames it in a hopeful, empowering way. Kids finish the book with a sense that they too can be ocean protectors, whether it’s by learning more, making small eco-friendly choices, or simply appreciating the natural world more deeply.

As an adult reader, I was surprised by how much I learned myself. I’ve walked past seaweed countless times without giving it much thought, but this book reminded me that every piece of nature—no matter how ordinary it looks—has a story worth telling. Swinimer has a gift for showing kids (and reminding grown-ups) that wonder is everywhere if you take the time to look.
