Best of Bridge: Comfort Food

If you’re looking for a cookbook that brings together the warmth of classic comfort food with a modern touch, Best of Bridge Comfort Food by Emily Richards and Sylvia Kong should definitely be on your radar. This book is part of the beloved Best of Bridge series, a Canadian culinary staple that has been passed through generations since its inception in the 1970s. Richards and Kong breathe new life into the collection with their creative yet approachable recipes that focus on comfort, nostalgia, and hearty flavors.

We met the dynamic duo of Richards and Kong in our reviews of other Best of Bridge cookbooks that have made it on to my permanent cookbook shelf: 5-Ingredient Cooking at https://canadiancookbooks.ca/best-of-bridge-5-ingredient-cooking/ and Done in One https://canadiancookbooks.ca/best-of-bridge-done-in-one-2/ as well as Everyday Celebrations https://canadiancookbooks.ca/best-of-bridge-everyday-celebrations/ and Kitchen Simple https://canadiancookbooks.ca/best-of-bridge-kitchen-simple/ Do you get the impression I like this brand of cookbooks? So handy for those hurry-up-and-eat weekday meals that can also be elevated for company on the weekend.

The Best of Bridge series is known for its crowd-pleasing, no-fuss recipes, and Comfort Food continues that tradition while incorporating contemporary ingredients and techniques. Richards and Kong successfully preserve the essence of what made the original series so popular while adapting to modern tastes. For instance, while you’ll find classics like macaroni salad and chicken noodle soup, there are also healthy options that reflect today’s dietary preferences, like the vegetarian meal section. This balance of traditional and modern is one of the book’s standout qualities, ensuring it appeals to both longtime fans and new readers.

What makes Best of Bridge Comfort Food especially delightful is its range of recipes that cover everything from appetizers to desserts. The book features sections on breakfast & brunch, salads & sandwiches, soups, 0classic meat sections, side and breads, and of course, desserts that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. With football and hockey games popular times to share fun and food, we thought you’d like to try the Slow Cooker Beef Dip Sandwich in our Recipe section. When serving this to our hockey family, I put out caramelized onions, roasted red peppers and sauteed mushrooms for add-ons. Now, that’s a crowd pleaser!

My family also tried a few of the other recipes in this book and some of our favourites were Asian Chopped Chicken Salad, Potato Bacon Chowder, Eggplant Parmesan, Smoked Salmon & Asparagus Quiche, Rotisserie Chicken Enchiladas, Giselle’s Family Tourtiere, and Poutine with Oven-Baked Fries. All were easy weekday meals that satisfied everyone around the table.

What sets this cookbook apart is how accessible the recipes are. The authors provide clear, step-by-step instructions that ensure even the most complex dishes are achievable for home cooks. Measurements are precise, and the cooking techniques are explained in a way that demystifies even unfamiliar recipes. This is especially important for comfort food, where you want the cooking process to be as enjoyable and stress-free as the eating experience.

The layout of Best of Bridge Comfort Food is clean and straightforward, making it easy to navigate. The full-color photographs are beautiful and serve as both inspiration and a visual guide for what your finished dish should look like.
