UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. UNHCR has operations in more than 133 countries. For decades, UNHCR has faced crises in many countries. They’ve provided life-saving assistance to asylum-seekers, refugees, internally displaced and stateless people. For millions forced from home, UNHCR saves lives and builds better futures.
UNHCR (Canada) developed a cookbook that reflects food from 13 countries around the world contributed by people that came to Canada under difficult circumstances.
Be adventurous and try Fish Liboke or Garlic-Butter Scallops from Africa; or how about Kofta or Ouzi from the Middle East; maybe Poached Chicken or Salty Caramel Pork from Asia – whatever you try, the flavours will dance on your taste buds! We tried the Chocolate Wrap from Syria – you’ll want to try it yourself by checking out our Recipe tab.
Tareq Hadhad of Syria experienced his own crisis when his family home, business and city of Damascus was destroyed with bombings and war (see our segment Canadians + Food for his full story). The Hadhad family wanted to support UNHCR with their initiative to introduce multicultural recipes from refugees who have made their way to Canada. You’ll love their chocolate wrap! “Tastes from Home” is filled with more than 100 pages of beautiful photos and recipes, each shared by a resilient individual who left their country of origin to make a home in Canada. This is your opportunity to experience the rich cultural backgrounds and traditions of former refugees through the food that has special meaning to them.
