Sunset Lake Resort

Thanks to River Street Writing, I received a copy of this book for review…and loved it. https://www.riverstreetwriting.com/ Joanne Jackson’s Sunset Lake Resort is a compelling blend of mystery and family drama, set against the backdrop of a dilapidated lakeside resort (somewhere in northern Saskatchewan!). Jackson weaves a narrative that is as tranquil as the setting itself yet brimming with emotional depth and intrigue.

When Ruby’s father passes away without leaving her the expected millions, her husband of 35 years, Steve, moves out. Now alone but in control of her own affairs for the first time, Ruby is torn between panic and relief. Investigating the remote beach cabin her father left her instead of his estate, she discovers a dilapidated resort in a secluded area, seemingly untouched since its former owner, Cecelia Johansen, died under mysterious circumstances. Despite the property’s condition and rumors of it being haunted, Ruby decides to move to Sunset Lake Resort, determined to uncover why her father bought it and why he left it to her. https://www.stonehousepublishing.ca/

The book explores various themes that many readers will appreciate: a marriage based on dated motives, relationships with children that may need to be re-examined, coming to terms with our parents after their death, a coming of age unfolding in our later years, embracing the unexpected and questioning new realities, and love in the most unique of circumstances.

Joanne Jackson, an award-winning author, has written three novels. Sunset Lake Resort was just released this spring while A Snake in the Raspberry Patch won the Best Crime Novel in 2023 and was shortlisted for the Saskatchewan Book Awards 2023. Her first novel, The Wheaton, was released in 2019. Joanne lives in Saskatoon with her husband and their old border collie.

I like to ask authors for a small glimpse into their kitchens and to provide a favourite recipe. Joanne obliged with a Sweet Potato Salad that you can find in our Recipe section. I made it for a ladies’ lunch, and it was met with great compliments.

While Sunset Lake Resort is a delightful escape into a world of mystery and drama, it also delves into deeper themes of self-discovery and healing. Jackson’s writing is eloquent and heartfelt, making this novel a thoroughly enjoyable read.
